Maryland Tax Free Week Returns

Shop Maryland is returning after a four-year hiatus. The popular tax-free week will take place from August 8-14.

During the tax free week, shoppers will receive a 6% tax break simply by purchasing qualifying clothing and footwear priced at $100 or less.

During the 2007 Special Session, the General Assembly approved two annual tax-free periods, a tax-free week on clothing and shoes in August, and a tax-free weekend for Energy Star Products and solar water heaters in February.

The tax-free week is designed to attract business to local retailers as consumers seek bargains. Organizers hope the timing of the event, just prior to the start of school, will encourage families to shop in Maryland as they purchase back-to-school necessities.

Items eligible for the tax break include: sweaters, shirts, slacks, jeans, dresses, robes, underwear, belts, shoes and boots. The large majority of items priced $100 and less will qualify for the tax break, but it should be noted that some items will not.

Accessories, including jewelry, watches, watchbands, handbags, scarves and belt buckles, are not exempt from sales tax. Special clothing or footwear designed primarily for protective use and not for normal wear, such as football pads, is also taxable.

Articles sold as a unit, such as a suit normally priced on a single price tag cannot be priced separately during the tax-free period to avoid sales tax.

A list of exempt and taxable items is available on the Maryland Comptroller’s Web site at www.marylandtaxes.com or by calling the Comptroller’s Office toll-free at 1-800-MD-TAXES.

Dinner Dialogues

Amazing Faith Dinner Dialogues to be held on August 8th in homes across the Greater Washington DC area will bring together small groups of people from diverse religious backgrounds living in the same community to share their faith experiences.

These dialogues are bound to include both “head” and “heart” sharing, as well as to address the areas of agreement and disagreement among the traditions represented. There are three ways to join in: 1) be trained as a facilitator 2) provide a host home and meal or 3) come as a guest.

Facilitators and those providing host homes should sign-up as soon as possible. Guests have until July 30 to RSVP. See http://lambertdrl.wordpress.com/2010/07/09/amazing-faiths-dinner-dialogues/ for more information including the sign-up link.
